We have one of the most resilient networks on the Isle of Man.
Our network is built using the latest hardware and technology from Cisco, Extreme and Foundry Networks.
We benefit from having multiple Layer2 connections off-island using different telecoms carriers.
Our network on the Isle of Man features both fibre and Microwave wireless connections which offer resilence and
no reliance upon a single Telecoms provider.
Transit
Wi-Manx connect to a number of Tier-1 and Tier-2 Internet Service Providers in order to achieve the best connectivity possible. For resilience,
we interconnect with our providers in London, Manchester and locally on the Isle of Man. All of our providers have superb connectivity in the UK,
Europe, Asia, America and throughout the world. We operate a full, multi-homed network using BGP4 operating under AS42455.
Points of Presence
We have several points of presence, two on the Isle of Man, one in Preston and one in London - this is to achieve site, city and hardware
resilience. All of our POPs feature high performance network hardware from Cisco, Foundry and Extreme Networks - with no reliance upon a single
vendor.
Internet Exchange Points
Wi-Manx maintain a low latency network by peering directly with other organisations at Internet Exchange Points (IXPs). An Internet
Exchange is an organisation that enables different companies to connect with each other directly over a common infrastructure. Each member
can then interconnect directly with other members.
Peering directly with other organisations decreases the number of hops, lowers latency and improves the overall quality of service.
Wherever possible, Wi-Manx are constantly increasing their peer-base.
Wi-Manx are currently members of LINX (London). It is estimated that 96% of the
UK's internet traffic goes through LINX. Big names such
as the BBC, Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Akamai are all members of LINX.
Carriers
Our connections are provided out of two local POPs with connections from Manx Telecom and E-llan Communications (MEA).
In the event one of the links fails, the network is configured to failover
automatically in a fraction of a second. Both off-island links have their own resilience and diverse paths,
this resilience is both on the off-island portion and on the onwards routes.
E-llan Communications (MEA)
E-llan Communications operate the only Manx owned and managed fibre optic service. The E-llan link offers one of the lowest
latency links off-island coupled with very-high capacity circuits.
Wi-Manx were one of the first local ISPs to benefit from this service
and are proud to be able to offer our customers a higher quality of service, lower latency and most of all, greater resilience.
Our link with E-llan is provided out of our Primary POP - routing via Blackpool, Preston, with
resilient paths through Manchester and the UK down to London.
Manx Telecom (Cable & Wireless)
Manx Telecom operate a high performance, resilient, diverse MPLS network using the Cable & Wireless fibre ring. One side of
the ring routes via Ireland, whilst the other side of the ring goes across to England and down to London - all using diverse paths.
Wi-Manx utilise this server to provide a resilient path to Telehouse, London. This service is delivered to our secondary POP.
